A depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with a depressive illness cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better.

The first step to getting appropriate treatment for depression is a physical examination by a physician. Conventional methods include psychotherapy, antidepressant drugs, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Certain medications as well as some medical conditions such as a viral infection can cause the same symptoms as depression and should be ruled out by a physician through examination, interview, and lab tests.

Treatment for depression varies according to the cause of the condition and its severity. Alternative therapies are particularly effective for minor depression, but for more serious depressions they should be considered as complementary treatments, not replacements for conventional methods. Major or chronic depression should be treated by a psychiatrist.
