Official Title: Massage for the Treatment of Pain in Cancer: A Randomized Phase II Study
Expected Total Enrollment: 60
Massage therapies are increasingly used in cancer care to alleviate problems such as stress and anxiety. Recent evidence suggests that these therapies may also help reduce pain. This study will test the ability of massage to reduce pain in cancer patients.
Participants in this study will be randomly assigned to receive one of three treatments: daily sessions of light touch massage, visits with a volunteer, or periods of quiet time. Participants will complete questionnaires about pain, anxiety and depression levels, and pain medication use. The questionnaires will be completed several times throughout the 6-day study. All participants will be offered a light touch massage at the end of the study.
