... Antithrombin III (Thrombate III®) is a natural protein given to people who have low levels of it in the blood. Low antithrombin III levels can be inherited, or in some cases, caused by other disease states. People with low levels of antithrombin III (i.e., antithrombin III deficiency) may have an increased risk for developing blood clots, especially during surgery or during pregnancy. Giving antithrombin III injections may help to reduce the risk for blood clots or help to treat blood clots once they have already developed.
