Bronchiolitis is inflammation of the bronchioles, the smallest air passages of the lungs. Causes The term usually refers to acute viral bronchiolitis, a common disease in infancy. This is most commonly caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV, also known as human pneumovirus).
