Ammonia Information and Side Effects
Ammonia is a chemical compound with the formula 3, since its molecule has a nitrogen atom with three hydrogen atoms all singly covalently bonded to the nitrogen as shown in the image at right. At standard temperature and pressure, ammonia is a gas. This gas is toxic and corrosive to some materials and has a characteristic pungent odor.

To detect elevated levels of ammonia in the blood, to evaluate changes in consciousness, or to help diagnose hepatic encephalopathy and Reye’s syndrome
When to get tested?
If a patient experiences mental changes or lapses into a coma of unknown origin; if an infant or child experiences frequent vomiting and increased lethargy as a newborn or about a week after a viral illness
