Clinical Trial: Short Course Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis (ABECB) (750 mg)

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to see if just 3 to 5 days of LEVAQUIN® 750 mg is as good as 5 days of ZITHROMAX® 250 mg or 10 days of AUGMENTIN® 875 mg in the treatment of acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (ABECB), and to see if there is a difference in side effects between the three drugs.

Official Title: A Randomized, multicenter, Blinded Study of the Efficacy and Safety of High-Dose (750 mg) Short-course (3-5 Days) Levofloxacin Therapy in Uncomplicated and Complicated Acute Bacterial Exacerbation of Chronic Bronchitis
Eligibility
Ages Eligible for Study: 18 Years and above, Genders Eligible for Study: Both
Criteria
Inclusion Criteria (including but not limited to):
- History of chronic bronchitis
- Diagnosis of Type-1 or Type-2 acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis (ABECB)
- If female patient: must be postmenopausal for at least 1 year, OR have hysterectomy, OR bilateral tubal ligation or otherwise incapable of pregnancy.
Exclusion Criteria (including but not limited to):
- Diagnosis of bronchial asthma
- Allergy or serious adverse reaction to any of the study medications or other quinolone or other penicillin or other macrolide
- Failed treatment of pneumonia or ABECB in past three months with any of the study medications or other quinolone or other penicillin or other macrolide
- Can not tolerate medication taken by mouth.
