Peptic ulcer is a non-malignant ulcer of the stomach (called gastric ulcer) or duodenum (called duodenal ulcer). By far most instances are now known to be due to Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that lives in the acid environment of the stomach. These ulcers can also be caused or worsened by drugs such as Aspirin and other NSAIDs.

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor used in the treatment of dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease (PUD), GERD and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole magnesium trihydrate is marketed by AstraZeneca under the tradename Nexium®. Esomeprazole is the S-enantiomer of omeprazole (marketed as Losec® & Prilosec®), and AstraZeneca claims improved efficacy of this single enantiomer product over the racemic mixture of omeprazole (see below). ...
