The heart (Latin cor) is a hollow, muscular organ that pumps blood through the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions. The term cardiac means "related to the heart", from the Greek kardia (καρδια) for "heart".

The term "congenital heart disease" indicates that a structural problem (or defect) in a baby's heart is present at birth. A baby's heart begins to form shortly after conception. By the end of the 2nd month of pregnancy, the baby's heart is completely formed. It is during this time that a congenital heart defect can occur.
