Descripción La Caléndula o Maravilla crece espontáneamente en el campo y diferentes lugares del planeta Está muy extendida en la zona mediterránea Europa meridional y norte de Oriente próximo Pertenece a la familia de las Asteraceae Compuestas que incluye alrededor de 20 000 especies entre las que se encuentran desde árboles arbustos y plantas herbáceas Es una planta herbácea anual con flores amarillas Su floración dura casi todo el año cerrándose de noche y abriéndose al amanecer Tiene una altura media que oscila entre los 30 50 cm su tallo es semi erecto angular y ramificado y sus hojas son alternas oblongas o lanceoladas y sensiles capítulos de 3 5 cm de anchura amarillos o anaranjados con una corona de 15 20 lígulas y frutos encorvados provistos casi todos de alas membranosas o púas dorsales Se cultiva muy a menudo en los jardines de los que escapa con facilidad Se usa como planta ornamental y desde hace siglos se viene empleando como planta medicinal debido a sus cualidades terapéuticas Desprende un olor desagradable y tiene un gusto amargo Efectos beneficiosos La Caléndula viene siendo utilizada como un remedio natural para tratar pequeñas dolencias y problemas epidérmicos como pueden ser las quemaduras de sol golpes magulladuras cardenales y arañazos por nombrar algunos En el pasado esta planta herbácea fue utilizada incluso para sanar vastas dolencias tales como fiebres úlceras e infecciones de la piel Las lociones y otras preparaciones tópicas de la Caléndula tinturas ungüentos cremas gargarismos de elaboración artesanal se siguen utilizando todavía extensamente en Europa especialmente en tratamientos lento curativos de la piel Muchas de estas formulaciones tópicas se pueden encontrar hoy en farmacias para farmacias y herboristerías de los Estados Unidos Actualmente los especialistas centran sus aplicaciones en su uso tópico como puede ser eccemas erupciones úlceras quemaduras pieles agrietadas picaduras de insectos inflamaciones y otras lesiones
