Abbie s Spica Cast
Abigail managed to break her femur September of 2004 It was a very short soft fall but we think that it was do to a cortizone injection complication brittled her bones a tad from her JRA treatments This was her in the ER after she was casted She is heavily sedated with morphine This cast was the worst It was plaster and weighed more than she did She suffered 2 1 2 months in this thing and barely slept at night She was literally driven nutty from it Not to mention it complicated her arthritis from being stationary for so long We were unable to give her meds for her JRA do to the fact anti inflamitories slow bone healing

Due to being very severly dehydrated when I was admitted to the ER due to diarrhea and severe nausea they hung a liter of saline and pumped in the whole thing I felt a hell of a lot better after being infused enough that I didn t mind the IV anymore That saline is good stuff So is the rocephin they pumped in next to it that was good crap too Morphine on the other hand not so fond of at this point nor vicodin I guess i m just weird
kidney stone Guy passed this weekend
Friday was an excruciatinly painful day for poor Guy He woke up in the morning with a pain in his side and within 5 minutes was climbing the walls trying to run away from the pain I should have taken him to the ER right there and then but the last time he passed one of these 4 years ago it was over after 3 hours So I called our doctor and they called in an emergency prescription to our local pharmacy The snow was coming down so heavily that I asked my neighbor landlord if he would drive me to pick up the meds I didn t know what to do Of course in hindsight I should have taken Guy to the ER immediately When he got some pain meds in his system he was a tiny bit better but the agony continued ALL DAY LONG It was nuts I was on the phone with customers very little so that was a good thing because the people that I did talk to were like what the heck is going on there My poor baby He was in so much pain And I know how women love to tease men by saying they are babies but unless you have passed one of these or been around someone who has you just can judge It was horrible Finally at around 6pm one of my friends called and heard Guy roaring in the background She came right over took us to the ER in Hudson and after some morphine Guy was feeling much better They took a CT scan and said the stone was 2mm wide and was right outside the bladder so the worst was over My poor husband They sent him home with a strainer and he eventually peed out the little bugger early Sunday morning Next time we ll take him to the ER pronto Better yet their won t be a next time Guy s dad in Israel has studied lots of Chinese herbs and told Guy to start drinking a glass of corn silk tea everyday to prevent this from happening again We went right out and bought a pack as soon as we could peel ourselves out of the bed I ve been suffering from a bad case of the flu since last Sunday Hopefully March will not be as painful for us all

Day 122 Our six year wedding anniversary in the ER
It s been a while since I ve updated here Sorry for falling off of the face of the earth for a short while It s due to the fact that our roommate John removed internet access from the livingroom area and put it in his bedroom I had no access to the web for a while I ve also been working full time and 12 hour days in my new job The stress has been overwhelming But now I m back and lets see if I can summarize the past few weeks The biggest event that happened to me occured this weekend <b>This weekend was my 6 year wedding anniversary with Eric and we spent it in the EMERGENCY ROOM of the San Francisco general Hospital I had minor surgery done < b> <b>It was quite possibly the most frightening experience of my life < b> It s not something I want to write about or revisit but it s kind of important Maybe it will help prevent anyone else from going through what I did 10 months ago I first noticed the small lump under my left arm pit I know this seems like the kind of thing I would write about here in my 365 days journal since I ve been documenting <i>every< i> aspect of my daily life but to be honest I didn t think much of it It was so small like a tiny pea embedded deep under the skin and it didn t hurt I thought it was a swollen lymp node I was under the belief that a lump had to be in your breast for it to be dangerous 5 months later it grew to the size of a pebble During my yearly breast exam my doctor felt it and observed that it was probably a cyst or a calcium deposit She gave me a referral for a specialist which I never followed up on I was in the middle of moving to San Francisco and I had just quit my job so I didn t have health insurance at that point 2 weeks ago It started to hurt a bit Just enough to cause discomfort and worry 1 week ago it began to grow larger and become more painful but I was so busy with work I didn t want to take off any days so early into a new job I m still trying to make a good impression Then the f
Kidney Stones Suck
So yeah This is how we spent our Friday Night This was after the worst of the pain and not coincidenally after the morphine
Wild Lettuce Lettuce Opium
Lactuca canadensis This plant is a mild legal sedative that grows in marginal soil and waste places A tea made from 1 4 teaspoons of the dried or fresh leaves can cause mild sedation drowsiness and relaxation In men it can cause involuntary erection concurrently with these other effects In people with sensitive constitutions it can cause euphoria It is my understanding that the chemistry morphology and botany of the Lactuca species has nothing in common with quot regular quot opium the kind that morphine and codeine are dervied from Papaver Somniferum I treat my chronic insomnia with a syrup I made from wild lettuce wood betony mint and a few other things According to Matthew Wood this herb provides a specific treatment for a quot blow to the testicles quot and the er unique pain associated with it Fellas take note This one protects the jewels
Agony
Today I tried waterskiing for the 1st time I managed to get up on the skis on my first try thanks to following the advice of keeping my arms straight I even managed to accidentally ski outside the wake I soon fell and things went downhill in a hurry Read on for more With my arms full extended I hit the water Hard Pop I re dislocated my left shoulder almost 10 years after the first time The pain was bad at first and a counselor jumped in to tow me to shore there was no way I was going to climb into that boat After 10 minutes a boat with a ladder arrived They pulled me out of the water and it was agony weightlessness is wonderful for dislocated joints After a 15 minute boat ride I was off to the hospital a 30 minute drive in light traffic That sucked I got to the hospital and into the ER The nurse asked if I was a runner since my pulse was so low 40 at the time The pain was still unbearable so they started a morphine drip with 2cc Soon my pulse was 30 and Doc figured that was enough morphine The pain was coming back even before it ever went away After some x rays and an interminable wait they gave me some Verced but a very light dose that had almost no effect Doc started manipulaing my shoulder and the pain hit 11 a couple times when I thought it was popped back in Finally it popped back in and it was unbearable Thankfully the worst was over They gave me some Percoset and sent me home The last time I went downhill skiing was at Gunstock in New Hampshire I broke my leg and had a cast put on at Lakes Region General Hospital 21 years later I was still in their database Funny how those things go I m pretty bummed right now but at least it was the last day of camp Not sure about the rest of the week but I m still optimistic about the Sox game I m going to try to set up an appointment for Wednesday morning to see a specialist any recommendations I ll need help to set up the TV but I think I ll be able to to find some help from work Looks like I won

ice cold towels and saw the damage I was starting to go into shock so we headed to the ER to get me checked out Two hours later and Heather Savannah Doris and the mummy headed home The pain was unbearable and only let up after 3 doses of morphine in the ER We finally got home and went to bed We went to the doctor on Monday to have the dressings changed and for a
Why do I have these surgical scars on my arm
Ok here s the story About 9 years ago when I was in Grade 11 I was running as fast as I can during my Physical Education PE class Running running running until all of a sudden I lost my footing and hit the floor WHAM I get up and my left arm I m not joking when I say this is flopping around I grab my arm with my right hand the PE teacher rushes over and escorts me into the main office at my high school F H Collins Senior Secondary in Whitehorse where the secretary calls an ambulance The paramedics arrive put a quot splint quot on my quot bent arm quot put me on a stretcher load me in the ambulance and then transport me to the Whitehorse General Hospital in Whitehorse where x rays were taken The x rays showed little pieces of broken bone in my arm my arm was just shattered So I spent 7 hours in the ER at the hospital in Whitehorse screaming in SO MUCH PAIN one of the ER nurses had to inject morphine in my thigh until the hospital finally got a bed ready in the surgical ward The next morning I was taken into the OR where I was quot knocked out quot and the surgeon went inside to put my arm back together with 2 plates and 12 screws The surgeon made two incisions one incision for the radius shown in this photo and another incision for the ulna 1 plate and 6 screws for each bone The next day after surgery I was discharged from hospital and had my arm in a sling for a month and a half After getting my arm out of the sling I had to undergo 3 full months of physiotherapy on my arm because my muscles had seized up on me when I had that sling on I couldn t straighten out my arm Because of getting those pieces of metal surgically inserted into my left arm the doctors didn t put a cast on when I had my arm in the sling Yup sometimes when I go through airport security the metal detector goes off So I have to show the security guard my scars and he she usually cringes They just cannot believe their eyes
It s been one of those days
UPDATE Lu is feeling much much better and almost sounds like herself again Very thankful for that The MRI didn t show up with anything which means they don t know the cause and won t know it With a single time bout they chalk it up to an anomaly Bad news is that it s likely to happen again and if it does they will do some extensive testing to try and determine the cause However they tried to start her on liquids again today and that did not go very well We re praying that there will be different results with it tomorrow as she won t be released until they have her on a steady liquid diet with steady levels Currently it s looking like the soonest that she will be out is on Monday Personally I m hoping It will be then and not carry on any longer Hospitals aren t the most restful places in the world or private and she s having a very hard time getting any sleep so the sooner she s home the sooner she can really rest and start to heal which according to the doctors will be a several month long process Thank you all so much for your prayers and kind words they truly mean the world to me END UPDATE Actually it s been a rough couple of days Lu was rushed into the ER yesterday for some abdominal pain she s been having for a week We thought it was muscle pain as she s started an exercise class and developing all sorts of aches and pains Sunday morning it was so painful she could barely breathe much less move Even after some heavy doses of morphine she was writhing in pain and sobbing We had no idea what was wrong And I was not able to be there After spending a day worrying our heads off over the initial prognosis of what was most likely fun stuff like peritonitis a CT scan and a bunch of other testing they figured out that she has acute pancreatitis Her lipase levels which at the normal high end of things range around 300 were topping 5800 19 times above She s gotten increasingly better levels dropping to 1000 overnight but she s still in an incred

Going In for My MRI Thanks Mike R flickr contact mobile
I ve taken the advice of others against what one person said and decided I would start taking pics of some of the tests I go through Depending on the nature of the test and the person administering it I can take some pics in some places The tech took this and said quot You Have A Message quot I didn t think much of it because I am very claustrophobic and needed to stay calm yep I ve done this quite a bit When I got finished my phone said memory was full and the only option was to email this Mike R a contact here had just given me his email and it was the first one there and I remembered RAD quite fitting so I sent it to Mike and asked him to hold it and he emailed it to me a little later little did I know that a little later I would be in ER due to High BP not from anxiety but the pain of having my arm in an uncomfortable position for over 40 minutes I got out and my face was huge and red and I became a guest of ER for a few hours until my Pressure went down while they tried to suggest some alternate pain meds What they gave me Hydromorphone they promised would knock me out Morphine oral it kept me up all night long which is why I am awake and posting this stuff I can t sleep
gillespie cheek
Had a tooth ache last week Went to the dentist and got a prescription for some antibiotics By the end of the day my face was enormous Went back to the dentist the next day and was told to go to the ER if the swelling continued into my neck Guess what it did So i spent Friday night in the ER from 11PM to 9AM Endured the worst pain of my life when the ER doc failed to numb my gums and then attempted to extract pus with the largest needle I ve ever seen in my life Nat said she almost threw up listening to me scream He was able to pull out 3 cubic centimeters of pus It was disgusting The only saving grace of the whole experience was the morphine That stuff is fantastic Hopefully the wisdom teeth will be extracted this week
Adam and Juliet
I had the worst day of my life I just got out of the ER emergency room for what I thought was a bladder infection which ended up being kidney stones Oh the agony of that The morphine and the pain was crazy Some people said it was like giving labor It didn t feel that way to me it just felt like something the size of my fist was stabbing me in the same spot over and over I ve never had kids so I wouldn t know But today I m taking it easy I feel like shit and thankfully i took this pic last night So here you go Note who should Juliet end up with Adam the rebel or Avery the genius warlock
