<b>Stories that made the news in 1968< b> THE next time a member of an older generation wipes a dewy eye as they tell you about the good old days refer them to this week in 1968 and ask them if they d like a sprinkling of salt to eat their words with Drugs burglary road traffic accidents slum clearances and terrible weather all conspired to deliver affirmation if it was needed that nothing really changes The week started with a drugs amnesty organised by Bristol constabulary s vice squad Thousands of pills and potions were handed in and while most came from the dusty corners of chemist storerooms a large amount of street drugs seems to have found its way into police custody These ranged from simple but now banned cough remedies from the first half of the century containing cocaine and cannabis to hard pharmaceutical compounds such as cyanide pethedrine and strychnine Amphetamines the number one target of burglars breaking into chemists were also in abundance One box handed in contained 500 French blues a pharmaceutical speed found in so called diet pills These were obviously the subject of larceny said vice squad inspector Harry Cox they couldn t be bought from a chemist in such large numbers One of the more unusual items was a First World War medical kit containing a large amount of morphine and originally issued to combat medics to ease the pain of injured soldiers on the battlefield Legal pills or rather the pill became more readily available in Bristol this week in 1968 The South West s first branch of the Brook Advisory Clinic opened in Filton Ostensibly it was opened to give the unmarried advice about emotional and sexual issues But the clinic was also able to dispense the female contraceptive pill and it gave Bristolian women an opportunity to manage their sexual health affairs away from the more restrictive environment of their GP The weekend crime figures of March 11 and 12 1968 made interesting reading over the cornflakes The litany
