Secret 6
I don t know when my sleep issues started It s been so long now I don t even remember what it feels like not to be tired most of the time to some degree or another but it s probably been ten years I typically wake up in the night after being asleep about 3 or 4 hours sometimes I cannot get back to sleep About 5 years ago I did a two night sleep study in California where they fasten a shit load of sensors all over your head arms chest and legs then expect you to sleep in an unfamiliar bed in a laboratory Needless to say they got very little data from me and on the second night I terminated the tests after lying awake for 6 hours so I could go home and get some sleep They diagnosed me with mild to moderate sleep apnea and suggested I try a CPAP machine a breathing machine that fits over your face and gently forces air into your lungs to prevent your throat closing when you are asleep I quit that after a week as I simply could not sleep with the damned thing I saw another sleep specialist here in South Florida and he doubted the conclusion from the previous sleep test having looked over the results I ve subsequently tried several kinds of sleeping pills from different drug classes including plain old valium nothing seems to work So here I am never really getting a proper night s sleep though I have to say lately I ve had more nights where I get through most of the night asleep at least If you want to see photos of a CPAP machine click on the globe next to my CPAP tag

the nose or sometimes people use what we call nasal pillows that plug into the nose Dr Pien says It s connected via tubing to a machine that is the size of a shoebox It delivers air under pressure The air helps to hold the airway open so these breathing pauses no longer occur and air and oxygen are all able to make it down into the lungs so that the rest of the body

My sister informs me all below Severe sleep apnea sufferers more likely to die Risk is five times higher than normal but treatment can cut the odds WASHINGTON Shakespeare once called sleep the quot balm of hurt minds quot Bodies too apparently People with the severe form of a disorder that interferes with sleep are several times more likely to die from any cause than are folks without apnea researchers report in the latest edition of the journal Sleep The findings in the 18 year study confirm smaller studies that have indicated an increased risk of death for people with sleep apnea also known as sleep disordered breathing quot This is not a condition that kills you acutely It is a condition that erodes your health over time quot Dr Michael J Twery director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research said in a telephone interview People with such disorders quot have been sleep deprived for perhaps very long periods of time they are struggling to sleep If this is happening night after night week after week on top of all our other schedules this is a dangerous recipe quot said Twery whose center is part of the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute The institute estimates that 12 million to 18 million people in the U S have moderate to severe apnea The condition is not always detected because the sufferer is asleep when the problem occurs and it cannot be diagnosed during a routine office visit with a doctor Researchers tested the patients for sleep disordered breathing in the laboratory and then followed them over several years Disrupted breathing depletes oxygen For people with apnea their upper airway becomes narrowed or blocked periodically during sleep That keeps air from reaching the lungs In some cases breathing stops for seconds to a minute or so the pauses in breathing disrupt sleep and prevent adequate amounts of oxygen from entering the bloodstream quot When you stop breathing in your sleep you don t know it it doesn t typically wake you up qu

she was fine all day She fell asleep on me for her nap About 10 minutes into it she came up sucking for breath Hoarse raspy breathing Can t catch her breath and her face is purple and her skin is cold Erich calls 911 I am getting ready to do mouth to mouth About 3 minutes of this and then her airway opened back up Off we go in the ambulance Lungs are clear airway is clear color is pink They even did 2 chest xrays to make sure there is no obstruction Clear After we get back home I start to think of what could have triggered it Erich was shampooing the rugs with an Oreck rug cleaner which stirs up everything I know the previous owner never cleaned these rugs We are thinking she breathed in a bunch of crap and had an allergic reaction and that is why her throat closed up So after the holidays I am finding a pediatric pulmonologist for the sleep apnea which she still has that everyone insists she will outgrow but hasn t and a pediatric allergist to have her tested She definitely reacted to something

airway must be flexible for the task of creating sounds swallowing food and liquids but for breathing we need a stiff tube that won t collapse while we suck air into our lungs Snoring is actually the upper airway becoming partially obstructed as the body relaxes into sleep As air moves through the limited space it causes the soft tissues of the throat uvula and
