Few members of the general public realize that diabetes is a name shared by two different diseases Although both result in high blood sugar what the words quot diabetes mellitus quot actually refers to and both can lead to the same complications if not managed properly the causes behind and often treatment of these two diseases is largely unrelated to one another Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas rendering the body unable to secrete insulin The cause is yet unknown but scientists think it is a combination of a genetic suseptibility and an environmental trigger that sets off the autoimmune attack Treatment for type 1 revolves around trying to mimic as closely as possible the way someone without diabetes releases insulin thorugh a combination of insulin injections or a pump carbohydrate counting and understanding how exercise stress and illness affect blood sugars Type 2 diabetes is a disease where the body produces plenty of its own insulin but the cells become resistent to its effect Type 2 is caused by a combination of genetic factors diet and lifestyle factors and obesity Treatment for type 2 revolves around helping the body use its naturally produced insulin more effectively through a healthy diet exercise and oral medications or insulin injections Over 90 of diabetics have type 2 and less than 10 have type 1 As a type 1 I sometimes feel overshadowed by the vast amount of attention the media directs towards type 2 diabetes and the misconceptions about type 2 that are applied to type 1 such as quot You can t eat sugar quot I wish that there was an equal focus from the media to education people about BOTH types of diabetes It also bothers me a lot when the media is clearly talking about type 2 and yet refers to it as simply quot diabetes quot without distinguishing
