FIREFIGHTERS WORK ON 24 HOUR CLOCK By Katie Nelson The Arizona Republic It s 8 a m when the B shift crew rolls into Tempe s Fire Station No 1 The brick building on Apache Boulevard is the largest of Tempe s six firehouses It s also the city s busiest Capt Hans Silberschlag sits at a large square table in the open dining room surrounded by the others there for the 24 hour shift A few sleepy looking firefighters who worked the shift before straggle out the door while Silberschlag s crew members who are close as brothers greet one another after four days apart It s a day like any other at the firehouse Life will go far beyond just fighting fires While battling blazes is still their priority the crew s jobs will encompass much more 8 40 a m The first call of the day comes less than an hour into the shift An overhead light blinks and a buzzer sounds A female dispatcher s voice calls out details over a loudspeaker while Silberschlag dashes out of the dining room into the firehouse s garage closely followed by Jeff quot J T quot Todd Scott Ehlers and Justin Williams It takes climbing two big steps to get into Engine No 271 After loading up they each pull on an earphone microphone set so they can talk to one other over the truck s blaring siren Todd maneuvers the truck through traffic Silberschlag uses a laptop computer and paper maps to navigate the fastest route The easygoing jokes and talk of a recent family Disneyland trip are left behind at the kitchen table They are quiet and solemnly serious Like the rest of Tempe s firefighter crews this group is trained as paramedics The first call like most of the others they respond to is a medical scene Someone has sliced herself up with a razor In back Ehlers and Williams snap on yellow latex gloves and get ready to hoist a heavy box of medications a heart monitor and other medical supplies out of the truck When they arrive they begin bandaging bleeding wounds and taking down a medical history Williams voice drops
