Smitty s Liquor Store My Family Dysfunction
COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL ALL RIGHTS RESERVED Photo Taken 12 12 08 Location Smitty s Liquor Store South Los Angeles California USA I took this picture of me left and my mother right standing in front of Smitty s Liquor Store because this store holds a special amount of signifigance in the story of my family s dysfunction as it relates to alcoholism and chemical dependency My grandmother my mother s mom lived down the street from this store Avalon Blvd and 135th Street South Los Angeles California This is the local store that she my grandmother would come to purchase small food items liquor and cigarettes I recall at one point my Grandma Jackie had a running liquor account at Smitty s The disturbing fact about this is that her husband my Grandpa Charles died at the age of 49 from Chirrhosis of the liver My Grandma Jackie would later almost die herself from her addiction to alcoholism But she stopped drinking in the late 1980 s only to die of throat cancer as a result of years of cigarette smoking A common reality of these types of urban liquor stores is the despair found outside of its doors I recall as a child that there would be homeless alcoholics and addicts that would hang outside of the store drinking socializing and begging for money from the store patrons When I would come to visit my mother I was raised by my father s mother Grandma Azzie I would often go with her to this store where she would purchase beer and drugs As a result my mother befriended most of the people that would hang outside of this store and she would introduce me to each one of them I am grateful to my mother for this because it taught me that I AM NOT TO PASS JUDGEMENT ON WHERE I FIND ANYONE ON THERE JOURNEY IN THIS LIFE I have therefore grown into the type of man that is not afraid to speak to people who live like this alcoholics addicts homeless It allowed me to foster compassion HOWEVER I CAN SEE HOW THIS HAS LEAD TO ME BEING AN ENABLER WHICH IS NOT ACCEPTABLE
