Cutaneous anthrax usually occurs through contamination of a cut
Cutaneous anthrax usually occurs through contamination of a cut or abrasion although in some countries biting flies may also transmit the disease After a 2 to 3 day incubation period a small pimple or papule appears at the inoculation site A surrounding ring of vesicles develops Over the next few days the central papule ulcerates dries and blackens to form the characteristic eschar Fig 15 1 The lesion is painless and is surrounded by marked edema that may extend for some distance Pus and pain appear only if the lesion becomes infected by a pyogenic organism Similarly marked lymphangitis and fever usually point to a secondary infection In most cases the disease remains limited to the initial lesion and resolves spontaneously The main dangers are that a lesion on the face or neck may swell to occlude the airway or may give rise to secondary meningitis If host defenses fail to contain the infection however fulminating septicemia develops Approximately 20 percent of untreated cases of cutaneous anthrax progress to fatal septicemia However B anthracis is susceptible to penicillin and other common antibiotics so effective treatment is almost always available

In the Hospital
A few days ago Bowie started behaving very strangely He became slow and stumbled around often losing his balance He stared at walls walked aimlessly often in circles and sometimes even bumped into things as if he couldn t see well I had given Bowie a bath a week earlier and I thought that perhaps he developed an ear infection from water getting into his ears An ear infection was a very plausable explanation for his balance problem All it would require is some antibiotics On Sunday night I took him to a 24 hour Emergency vet hospital where they performed a series of blood and neurological tests They quickly ruled out an ear infection and were convinced that something was not right with his brain Monday evening I went to another Vet and then Tuesday morning went to see a neurologist who was also convinced that this was a neurological problem Blood tests ruled out various viruses fungi and organ failures Based on a variety of tests and statistics the neurologist was confident that Bowie had meningitis and not a tumor Bowie exhibited symptoms that pointed to several areas of the brain If it was a tumor it likely would have initially manifested in one part of the brain If it was meningitis it could be viral bacterial or fungal or due to his own body s immune system attacking itself The best way to determine what was wrong was to do an MRI scan of his brain which Bowie had this afternoon Tonight I got the news that it was meningitis and that it was caused by the immune system attacking his brain The only treatment is a type of chemotherapy every 3 4 weeks to dampen the immune system As bad as this sounds the drug is injected with a tiny needle and the treatment itself is not painful I was afraid from prior experience with chemo that Bowie would be suffering during these treatments Bowie had his first chemo treatment tonight and is staying in the hospital overnight I just spoke to his nurse and he is resting comfortably We hope that the treatment works and that it will

it s only gotten worse
Hey Flickr Some intense stuff has happened within the past week It all started Thursday June 18th I had a mild sore throat at work and really thought nothing of it except that I was mad that I might be getting a cold or something Later that night I hang out with friends and have like two beers and vomit quite a bit Come on I can take more than that many beers before getting sick My friends are all jerks by the way Okay so then I go home and the next morning I have this insane headache and I can t get out of bed without seeing gray and being on the verge of fainting I figure I just have an intense flu because I ve had it before and that is what it was like for me I searched quot headrush quot and some other things like quot sore throat quot on google and I scared myself thinking I had meningitis for a while I end up sleeping all day The next morning I have to get up for work and it is really hard to get out of bed and my throat hurts so bad I can t even swallow saliva and lymph nodes in my neck are swollen I call into work and that morning I go to the doctor and he just does that lame check up where they put that wooden stick on your tongue and look into your ear and listen to your lungs He and I assumed I had strep throat so of course he prescribes antibiotics When I started taking them the sore throat never went away but now I had ugly canker sores on the inside of my cheeks and it spread to my gums and it was all over my tongue I looked around on the internet and I guess I had quot thrush quot which is a fungus that people have in their mouths that just goes insane when they are taking antibiotics or they are diabetic or have a suppressed immune system I can t eat because it hurts all over my mouth and my gums bleed periodically I also thought maybe I have gingivitis or peridontis but the dentists office told me I can t schedule an appointment until I am not sick anymore I am kind of mad that the doctor s office didn t do a test for strep I guess I do have mono which is even
