JOHN OMAR SHEWMAN
John Omar Shewman was a cobbler by trade when he joined the volunteer fire department in Los Angeles sometime in the late 1880 s He worked at A S Avery Shoe Company in Pomona California for a period of time also He worked as a printer in Los Angeles where he and one of his brothers had opened a shop It was in Los Angeles that the passion to fight fires started and he served four years in the Los Angeles Fire Department under Walter Moore The Pomona Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1883 John had come to Pomona with his parents from Petrolia Ontario Canada in 1884 In 1892 John O Shewman first appears in the fire departments records as a member of Hook and Ladder Company 1 The records of 1895 indicate John O Shewman was listed as janitor of the Hose House which paid 10 00 a month He was still a volunteer fireman but held one of the few paying jobs in the department A Fire Chief in 1898 got 10 00 a month and in 1899 a fireman was listed with a salary of 40 00 a month By 1903 John O was foreman of the engine company under Chief H P Wilkinson At that time there were about 75 volunteers who were paid a dollar for each fire they attended and twenty five cents for every fire drill October 3 1917 John O Sheman was initiated as Fire Chief There were many articles in the Pomona Bulletin and Pomona Progress the newspapers of that time which mention John throughout his tenure as Fire Chief He was also in advertisements in the local papers indorcing life insurance He was liked and respected by the citizens of Pomona John was known by the nickname of Jack Shewman He was a member of the Pacific Coast Association Of Fire Chiefs the Odd Fellows Lodge No 246 The Woodmen Of The World and the Maccabees in which he reached all the chairs He was married to Hattie Evalena Earle in 1894 and they had eight children Hattie died in 1908 of consumption tuberculosis John O married a second time in 1925 to Lany Greenfield Cline who remained his wife until the time of his death in 1931 He went
