Hospice in Belsize Park
in 1984 I took these pictures to accompany a magazine article about dying in a hospice I was very moved by the people I met both staff and residents It was a very enlightening experience and went some way towards providing me with a more stable and complete reference with which to work when it comes to my own mortality I don t remember the names of these people neither the living nor the dead but I offer these pictures in honour of them all

Difficult dying
quot Dying is not always beautiful It can be full of sights and sounds feelings and anguish that are not pleasant or necessarily comforting Dying and being with the dying can be difficult exhausting heart breaking and can cause such deep heartache that who would call it beautiful These words came to me as I was working on a painting that represented the dying of an elderly man who drowned in his own blood as he hemorrhaged to death in front of my eyes and in my arms This hospice moment occurred over 15 years ago and is among the hardest hospice experiences that I have had in my many years as a hospice nurse Talking about it and writing about it to this day brings tears to my eyes It has only been in writing and talking about it painting the picture that represents it and presenting this to others that I have been able to see the gift and lesson in this experience I hesitated to present such a graphic and disturbing picture of dying I am afraid that it will be too much for some to read and hear But it is as much a part of life and death as the more gentle and usual pictures of hospice deaths It also was a lesson along my path that I needed to experience James was in my life s path to help me see that no matter what we give to another it is giving our own self and spirit to that person that is what is important and necessary To be with another is the greatest gift we can give To hold that hand to soothe with silent presence to walk along side of that other is to give them strength and courage to walk their path The path to deaths door is no different than through this life we are living James death was a good death It was not an easy death but he was not alone He had his family there and I was there to hold him and whisper in his ear directions to and through the door I used to wonder how Mother Teresa and the Sisters of Mercy could just be with the dying that laid on a mat or hard floor I wondered if she had the morphine or valium to administer to her patients so that
