Portrait of a Mastectomy
I am a 5 year breast cancer survivor On March 17th 2004 I had my left breast removed I ve been through the chemo and the hair loss and thankfully I was spared the radiation treatments Today I feel I am past the whole thing and every day since the day I was diagnosed I have been overwhelmed with gratitude I know others have not been as lucky I know many families grieve the loss of loved ones This makes me even more grateful but no less humbled by the whole experience Since my mastectomy I have toyed with the idea of exploring my situation in a visual documentary images that capture moments and moods images that express where I was mentally and emotionally at various times through out the process So to that end I offer up my first attempt at a self portrait It is the new me sans breast I am putting this out there so others will see that I am still a whole human being and a beautiful woman who has not lost her creative spirit I truly hope that this image and any yet to come will not offend or insult anyone I do not apologize or make excuses because this is who I am I am alive
