Summer Madness aka Summertime David Lean 1955

The credits for Summer Madness 1955 proudly proclaim that it was photographed entirely in Venice David Lean s love for the city shines out in every scene The film was to become his favourite It was based on a Broadway play which explored the old Henry James subject of New World innocence meeting and being seduced by Old World charm and experience but the city is such a central character in the film that it is hard to see how the story worked on stage Once again it was Alexander Korda who brought subject and director together It was Lean s third film in colour ravishingly shot by Jack Hildyard and an Anglo American co production In its theme of an adulterous love affair the Italian is married it echoes both Brief Encounter 1945 and The Passionate Friends 1948 Like Brief Encounter it begins with a steam train thundering into the frame Like The Passionate Friends it includes a motorboat ride for the lovers Lean is not afraid to show all the tourist sites and he marshals his crowd scenes with great aplomb In Katharine Hepburn he had a huge star and the truthfulness of her playing of an ageing American spinster achingly alone in a city of lovers saves the film from being what suggested critic Dilys Powell might otherwise have been a novelette within a documentary Hepburn and Lean became life long friends but were never to make another film together Some of the symbolism there is a shoe motif and the lovers finally come together to the accompaniment of a firework display over the city may seem too obvious to modern audiences and the whole film is shamelessly romantic and glamorous but like Venice herself it is hard to resist Janet Moat Screenonline

As You Lean Into The Light

Looks much better <a href= http bighugelabs com flickr onblack php id=2842725509 amp size=large >large on black< a> of course HBWE Perhaps appropriately for quot spilling my secrets quot on photography and processing I processed this a few days ago and can t remember for the life of me what I did to it Whoops But I can probably guess because when all is said and done I am rather predictable this goes for all areas of my life heh Quite a few of you have asked me to spill the beans on my tricks so I have spent the last 12 hours thinking quite a bit about what I could say that would remain fairly concise Here is what I ve been able to think of so far 1 Believe it or not I shoot exclusively in JPEG these days I had to stop shooting RAW in January after my hard drive ran out of space I haven t been able to save the money required to buy another external drive but I hope to do that by the end of the year It s just as well though because I had a lot of graininess problems shooting RAW with my camera and this has worked out better for me for the time being 2 These days I shoot almost exclusively with my 50mmf 1 8 and probably about 60 of the time I use autofocus My husband tells me that this is lazy of me but I don t care if I can get the result with autofocus I am not going to spend a bunch of time manually focusing Plus I think you can get unique results with each method 3 As far as processing goes I am a huge fan of actions I definitely tweak them sometimes and combine them and learn from them The actions I use most frequently these days are <a href= http flickr com groups michelleblack >Michelle Black s Vintage Mod XP amp Funky XP< a> and <a href= http flickr com groups elusive >Jinna elusive s actions< a> particularly the quot warm deepblue quot from the soft crossprocessing package and quot peach quot from the fruity package but I love them all I also love <a href= http flickr com photos laurenrosen

construction patch a guy sitting waiting his turn to go the other way dry as a bone with the driver side door of his truck wide open wind coming from his right looked at me with a huge shit eating grin and said How you doing   I wanted to say thinking of taking up a career in carjacking want to give me a hand   About 5 miles before Oakley I saw a motel beside the road which had a stylish little neon sign saying Almost in the window Rather than struggle to stay straight and risk falling I decided to go boldly where few men had gone before into the ditch   I m here to say there s really no problem with that I just came to a quick stop due to the high grass tried not to look too embarrassed and climbed back on the road and went on   The wind continued to intensify fierce to say the least I saw in my motel room later that gusts to 47 mph had been recorded in the area   I got blown off the road many times but after my little ditch fandango I wasn t too concerned   I stayed mostly dry but about 10 miles outside of Oakley I came upon a road construction site where cars and trucks were lined up waiting for the pilot truck to come back leading cars from the other side and lead these cars across   I had a nice conversation with the flagman which was kind of reassuring it wasn t as windy as yesterday holy moly and if there were tornados anywhere nearby they would stop construction which they hadn t   But in those 5 minutes it began to drizzle then rain which is when I began to get my lesson on stinging rain   As I rode beside the cars and trucks once the pilot truck went our way it began to pour   When I got to the other side of the   Almost made it to Oakley I intended to write sooner I planned to go to the library in Norton KS Thursday morning but there were going to be severe tornado spawning thunderstorms that afternoon so I figured I d try to outrun the system to the south and west by leaving early in the morning   In one of those slightly eerie events that make you t

Day 5 Year 2 I m absorbing some somewhat shocking though not entirely unexpected news I wish it wasn t so but hey we don t always get what we wish for do we There are more important things for me to worry about in my life than this little issue as it doesn t really affect me much at all but I think about it all the same Such is life right PS I do totally give up on not taking grainy photos I ve tried the suggestion of a higher ISO but it just doesn t seem to work quite frustrating actually
