Food crisis in Ethiopia
Severely malnourished child at Damota Pulassa health centre in Wolayita Ethiopia Six month ago it was assisting 10 to 15 children a week now the number is up to 162 children every week Statistically for every severely malnourished child one knows about one should count 10 to 20 malnourished children one doesn t know about This means that in Damota Pulassa alone there could be as between 2000 and 4000 malnourished children for a population of 130 000 Health specialists consider this numbers very alarming Aid organizations assisting the Health Centres assist only the severly malnourished children When children are quot stabilised quot or brought to quot normal malnutrition level quot they are sent home with some food supplements and followed up in outpatient conditions Often their hungry families share the food meant to strengthen the malnourished child Communities and the Red Cross are targeting the families of malnourished children as a priority Photo José Cendon IFRC p17873 To find out more go to <a href= http www ifrc org what disasters recovering food security asp >www ifrc org< a>
