Adventure Racing

This is a picture of me participating in my first adventure race in Winder GA June of 2006 Adventure racing is different from other traditional organized races such as triathlons and marathons in that adventure racing has a beginning and an ending point what happens in the middle is up to the race coordinators and your teams ability to navigate threw the course In a typical adventure race there can be biking running canoeing kayaking swimming and orienteering the order and distance is left unknown until the end Races start at four hours and can last multiple days A team usually consists of two males and one female and each team mate much stay with in 100 yards of the other members Each team has a compass that they use to find specific coordinates on the map to get to the next set of instructions Adventure racing was started by a man named Gerald Fusil in 1989 1 He held the first official adventure race called The Raid It started on one side of New Zealand and after 11 days and 350 miles teams reached the other side of the Island Raid Teams are made up of five members one of which has to be female Since then there have been races in Madagascar Oman Patagonia and Costa Rica each race is specifically designed for the terrain of the area Participants are only told the name of the country and the disciplines to train for Actual course location and order of events aren t revealed until two days before the race starts 1 When journalist Martin Dugard was asked why people crave this type of torture this was his reply This new kind of athlete is changing traditional sports it is taking it to extremes and beyond having touched and felt the sensations that I went through on The Raid I never want to shy away Their embrace makes me feel capable not just of attaining greater dreams but of being happy whatever my lot 1 For more information please check out adventure racing on wikipedia at <a href= http en wikipedia org wiki Adventure racing >en wikipedia or
