St John s Wort
These little flowers are growing along the banks of the stream at the bottom of my garden I think they look quite alien perhaps I have Martians at the bottom of my garden instead of fairies The name of this plant comes from the tradition of harvesting it on St John s day the 24th June It was used in the past to ward off evil but today is known as a herbal treatment for depression

St John s Wort was growing wild in a meadow at the golf course Since I had my camera in my golf bag I managed to get a couple of shots while waiting to get onto the next hole St John s wort Hypericum perforatum once thought to rid the body of evil spirits has a history of medicinal use dating back to ancient Greece where it was used to treat a range of illnesses including various nervous conditions It also has antibacterial and antiviral properties and because of its anti inflammatory properties has been used to help heal wounds and burns In recent years there has been renewed interest in St John s wort as a treatment for depression and there has been a great deal of research done on this topic <a href= http darckr com username username=ann+j+p amp format=Medium amp >See my photos on Darckr com< a>

St John s Wort 1
While hiking around on the land a friend and I climbed down a deer path to the shore of Copsey Creek And there was St John s Wort Now I realize that I will have to go back to check to see if the flower has black spots on the pedals to determine if it is the native or the nonnative species called Klamath Weed As we clear more paths there is more opportunity to find new plants that I couldn t see or in some cases get close to I think I will have to brave the thick soupy green water and tour the perimeter by kayak again
