Meet Keiki and her family As written by her mom Keiki suffers from Hypopituitarism which is the decreased hypo secretion of one or more of the eight hormones normally produced by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain If there is decreased secretion of most pituitary hormones the term panhypopituitarism pan meaning quot all quot is used Keirsten has panhypopituitarism Keirsten does not produce thyroid hormone growth hormone and ACTH hormone When someone is ACTH deficient then they do not produce cortisol witch similar to Addison disease Cortisol controls key functions in the body It acts as an anti inflammatory maintains blood sugar levels and blood pressure This is the most likely hormone if deficient to place a child in a life threatening situation This is the one we have to worry about when Keirsten gets sick When you or I get sick we produce extra cortisol to help are body deal with the stress and Keirsten s does not Putting her in a life treating situation adrenal crises When Keirsten gets older we will most likely have to deal with the puberty and sex hormones Keirsten gets growth hormone injections every night and takes Levothyroxine for her thyroid once a day and a steroid 3 times a day to replace the cortisol When Keirsten gets sick we have to double triple or more her steroid check her blood sugars and if she can t keep her medicine down we have to give her an emergency injection of solu cortef steroid If we can t keep her stable at home then we have to go to the emergency room These things and medications she will have to deal with for the rest of her life Keirsten is small for her age but is slowly growing Keirsten has had a rough year with a lot of hospital stays for adrenal crises and hypoglycemia She has also had a couple of seizures due to hypoglycemia Through all of this she is one tough happy little girl and we are privileged to be her parents You can see more of this shoot from my partners photostream <a href= http www flickr com photos lisa
