Sunrise at Mono Lake 120 seconds
On this recent trip to California I took along four different cameras Holga Nikon FM2 Pentax 67 and pinhole Of those I have posted my favorites of three of those cameras So here is one of my favorite pinhole shots this one taken at Mono Lake about 6 in the morning Even though I am a morning person awake and alert without the aid of even coffee I very rarely get up for sunrise For Mono Lake though we made an exception setting our alarms for 5 30 and then racing down to the lake to catch the first light of the day I broke out an old roll of Agfa Ultra 50 just for this particular trip Ultra 50 was an insanely saturated color negative film that Agfa put out 8 10 years ago and this one roll had been sitting in my fridge waiting for the right day Unfortunately I underexposed a majority of the roll that was taken the night before at sunset but this shot from the next morning came out quite well as the rising sun lit up a nearby tufa formation Mono Lake really is a landscape from another world and the history of the area is quite amazing too The lake and its ecosystem were nearly destroyed when the city of Los Angeles began diverting water that normally fed into the lake causing the water level to drop several feet every year After a decade or two of this the dropping water levels exposed these tufa formations which were caused by fresh water springs in the lake bed bubbling up and leaving mineral deposits Unfortunately the rapidly dropping water level also damaged the fragile ecosystem which supports hundreds of thousands of migratory birds The island in the middle of the lake used to be a popular nesting grounds for thousands of gulls until the diminishing level of the lake opened a land bridge to the island allowing predators easy access to the baby birds Fortunately some far thinking citizens scientists and activists fought to halt the damage and now plans are in place to raise the level of the lake back up about 17 feet Nonetheless some of the damage done is still a long wa
Endeavour at Mono Lake
During my Mono Lake visit this spring I had a chance to capture its overwhelming beauty just the way I wanted That sounds pretty easy Well not for me I studied several locations and angle s nothing could really give me the grandeur I was feeling at that moment Except this bizarre composition It attracted me from the beginning and although I had mixed feelings towards it I took the shot with care while also considering the limitations of my equipment Once home I left the photograph alone for a couple of weeks Today I opened it in NX and there it was again the feeling I had while taking the shot The feeling of Mono Lake Mono Lake California 2008 all rights reserved © Johannes de Jong To see it bigger click <a href= http www johannesdejong com Galleries tabid 971 galleryType SlideShow ItemID 513 Default aspx >here< a>

Sun Breaks Through Mono Lake
I took a lot of shots from my Mono Lake winter trip so I m posting a couple more perspectives because well I m sorting through slides and I didn t take many new trips this summer so I don t have a lot of different stuff to upload So there The lake looks very calm but by the time I paddled to the other side the wind had the lake in a frenzy The sun played peek a boo and I caught this shot as it peeked but I caught some lens flare that I should probably Photoshop out but I don t Photoshop very well Canon Elan 7 Canon 17 40mm lens Fuji Velvia 50 film polarizer 3 stop hard GND filter to keep the sun from completely blowing out the pic For the Published and Be Damned Group this image was published for the 2008 Prijon Kayak Catalog page 28 <a href= http www prijon com downloads 2008booteenglish72dpi pdf >www prijon com downloads 2008booteenglish72dpi pdf< a>

Mono Lake Colorful Evening
The colors of Mono Lake in the morning and evening are amazing The sun paints the sky which paints the water The entire basin sings with color nearly every morning and evening And of course using Fuji Velvia 50 film doesn t hurt the colors either Taken with a Canon Elan 7 Fuji Velvia 50 film Canon 24 85mm lens
Mono Lake Reflections
This was from my first night shooting Mono Lake I know you re wondering where the tufa structures are or maybe you re not I was in a hurry The sun was setting and we just drove to the first Mono Lake turn off we could find then I bolted out the car and tried to shoot the remaining light I missed the really good light by about 10 minutes The light was still good though and this was the calmest I saw the lake all 3 days

Tufa Sunburst Mono Lake
I was kayaking Mono Lake in mid winter After several days of stormy weather I awoke to a beautiful predawn morning I walked around on the crisp frozen snow and enjoyed the odd beauty around me I wanted to get a sunrise photo as a way to end my trip although I wasn t in a very good position to see the rising sun I set my tripod up and pointed my camera in the general direction of where I anticipated the sun to come up The sun seemed to rise quickly and without even adjusting my tripod I noticed it had risen directly between two tufa tower formations as if I had done it on purpose Clickity click click click I need to rescan it at a higher resolution and resharpen it it s not a very good scan Shot with a Canon Elan 7 Fuji Velvia 50 film Canon 17 40mm lens 81B warming filter Galen Rowell Singh Ray 3 stop hard GND filter
