Today was such a good day for me I went to visit someone from The National Autistic Society As of next week I am officially a volunteer for them I am spending one day a week with an autistic child The child I am spending time with has been bullied out of 3 schools because the other children don t understand him he is 13 years old and doesn t have many friends He just wants people to spend time with and understand him I am very lucky to have this opertunity Autism is a brain development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior These signs all begin before a child is three years old Autism involves many parts of the brain how this occurs is not well understood People with Autism find it hard to understand emotions and feelings they can t read facial expressions This is my take on autism I hope through this experience I can find out a lot more about it and a lot more about myself whilst doing so

This is Cal He s almost 4 years old Cal is autistic He s an angel living in his own interior world And yet he seems utterly content in his aloneness somehow complete within himself He s a gentle soul who likes amp accepts affection on his terms Autism is far more common in boys than girls There is no cure and little is understood about its causes Diagnosis is based on behavioural patterns inability to interact socially and poor ability to communicate Lack of eye contact facial expression and body language preference for strict routines and repetitive actions like spinning are prevalent symptoms also My heart soars when Cal includes me in his special world when he takes me in by reaching out with eye contact and perhaps a smile It is so worth waiting for In September he will enter junior kindergarten in the public school system He s been attending daycare 5 mornings a week to help prepare him for the enforced social intergration of school His family s hope indeed their expectation is that there will be a one on one autism intervenor available to him in the classroom in addition to the regular teaching staff But public funding for the needs of autistic kids is a bone of contention in the province of Ontario The Liberal government has broken its promises to adequately fund intensive behavioural intervention therapy IBI and families who have been waiting for years are disappointed and frustrated Early intervention maintained over a long period of time is necessary for any chance of improved language and social skills which will improve the quality of life Autism Spectrum Disorder ASD Cal is not on the deep end of the spectrum but he does have defined symptoms The prevalent sleep disorder of autism is not his He sleeps well But he has trouble filtering the world and its inhabitants He can become overwhelmingly sensitized to light sound vibrations to stimuli And he has much difficulty communicating with language in its traditional form He chooses silence a great deal
