Wondering Where I ve Been Hanging My Hat

Explore 108 April 16th Haven t been online for a few weeks First a business trip and then I had 2 of my Grandsons for a week It was such fun to have the boys all to ourselves For those of you who follow my stream these are <a href= http www flickr com photos skasper >skasper s< a> boys one of whom is an Insulin dependent Type 1 Diabetic This was my first experience maintaining an Insulin Pump and although it really is not that difficult it is fairly nerve wracking as his little life depends on this being done properly The hard part is changing the set where the pump attaches to the child and inserts the Insulin In my Grandson s case this was attached to his little behind The set change needs to be done twice a week but we had a few problems and so I had to do this almost every other day My daughter in law told me it was just dumb luck hmmmm dumb do you think she was talking about me The problem really mushroomed one day when we were away from the house and a set change became necessary I called skasper and he told me the insulin pump was blocked and I would have to change the set in this public place He said he would talk me through the process it isn t really THAT bad just 20 or 30 steps while trying to balance a cell phone to my ear and holding still a squiggling little high energy 5 year old kind of like aiming at a moving target The pump is attached to my grandson s tush so it also involved holding a little shirt up and little pants down But when skasper said that to dry the application that holds the inserted needle in place I had to blow on my grandson s behind with dozens of people watching and I knew that somewhere in that crowd there had to be a police officer from Law and Order Sexual Offense Unit who would surely report a case of sexual abuse of a minor by a GRANDMOTHER I started to feel that I had finally hit my limit Oh Lord you really need a sense of humor to be a good Grandmother You have great

High blood sugars are what cause almost all of the problems associated with diabetes In the short term high blood sugars and dehydration can lead to the immediately life threatening condition of diabetic ketoacidosis Over the long term less extreme highs cause all sorts of problems Glucose is not harmful when it is funnelled directly into muscle cells by insulin and is used for fuel When it builds up in the bloodstream however and touches other types of cells mdash heart cells eye cells kidney cells nerve cells and even the cells lining blood vessels themselves mdash glucose is toxic This is what causes all of the long term complications of diabetes Unfortunately high levels of glucose in the body also provide a virtual breeding ground for bacteria which make diabetics who are not in the best of control prone to infections Infections cause higher blood sugars as the body tries to fight them off and higher blood sugars further encourage bacteria growth which well if something isn t done to break that cycle it can become vicious My control has been less than stellar the past month or so judging from the average 30 day blood sugar of 8 7 mmol L 157 mg dl It wasn t really surprising to me then that I developed an infected fingernail In the past when my A1c was in the 8 9 range I had two infected fingernails which caused my entire finger to swell up and oozed goop and required antibiotics Antibiotics would be overkill for this though so for now it s Polysporn and soaking in hot water to try to get rid of it as well as doing some basal and bolus testing to try to tighten that control
