For shooting outdoor sports in ahem inclement weather The camera isn t waterproof so needs to be protected I don t think the lens though an L is fully weather sealed either My super cheap home made solution is a plastic shopping bag and some electrical tape the rugby players love electrical tape so there s plenty about The handles of the bag are wrapped around the lens hood then taped in place I then tape both sides of the top of the bag to the hood Once mounted the bag stretches back over the lens covering it and the camera I keep it in place with my right hand which stays on the camera s grip Things not to forget the cleaning cloth Last time the wind blew so much rain onto the front of the lens that the auto focus started to play up and contrast began to suffer I went to get the cloth but discovered it was in my other camera bag At home I bought the 200L as the Sigma 70 300 I started out with was just too slow if the weather was anything other than bright sunshine For poor weather light f 2 8 or faster if you can get it is essential for maintaining high shutter speeds The 70 200 f 2 8L is a popular choice for sports as a result <a href= http flickr com photos elwanderer 806983362 >and I got sent one by mistake < a> but was out of my price range and rather heavy for my tastes I miss being able to zoom sometimes the action suddenly comes straight at me and I can t back peddle fast enough

A charming game played at my school s sports day where the sudents from one team have to try to force the giant ear bud cleaning stick thing of the other team to the ground thus crushing some of the members of that team who are standing round it trying to protect it Brilliant
