I just met Hymie through my work with Travis County RSVP a nonprofit agency that connectes older people looking for volunteer work with the many agencies and organizations in Travis County that are looking for volunteers Part of my job is to interview and photograph exemplary volunteers Hymie certainly is that When his wife became ill with Alzheimer s Disease Hymie became her full time caregiver Around the time that his wife s abilities started to diminish he learned that the temple he belongs to <a href= http www bethisrael org target= blank >Congregation Beth Israel< a> was forming an Alzheimer s Caregiver Respite Group The purpose of this group later named Circle of Friends is to give the caregivers of Alzheimer s patients a break for a few hours so they can take care of themselves do some shopping visit the doctor or whatever they needed to do for themselves Hymie helped start the program several years ago and has been a reliable and jovial volunteer there ever since His wife passed away last year but Hymie continues to serve He s there every single Thursday just about all day greeting the patients and caregivers helping to serve breakfast and lunch smiling listening giving hugs and truly caring This picture and my words cannot communicate what a sweet and warm fellow Hymie is you have to witness this in person But take my word for it this guy is one of the nicest and most endearing people I ve ever met
