William Bill John Jones Jr of Olathe Kansas died on Sunday

William Bill John Jones Jr of Olathe Kansas died on Sunday March 2 2008 at his home Bill was born in Honolulu Hawai i on July 4th 1921 the son of the late Col William J U S Army Ret and Evangeline L Jones Bill was also preceded in death by his brother Paul Bill lived in Olathe the last 5 years of his life at the Homestead Assisted Living Community Following graduation from St Agnes High School in Long Island New York in 1939 and attending Duquesne University in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania for 2 years he entered active service with the U S Army during World War II While assigned to the 6th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 1st Armored Division he valiantly served his country in the Anzio Rome Arno Northern Appenines and Po Valley campaigns of Italy As testimony to his heroic service Bill earned a battlefield officer commission in December 1944 and was also awarded a Bronze Battle Star Later he was a part of the Allied occupation of Germany After the war he returned to his parent s home in Leavenworth and continued his military career as a member of the Kansas National Guard and the U S Army Reserves where he was promoted to the rank of Captain In 1951 Bill was presented a commendation by Kansas Gov Edward F Arn for his meritorious service during the disastrous storms and floods which occurred in the state On May 15th 1954 he married Marjorie Jean Nelson of Leavenworth Shortly thereafter the couple moved to Kansas City Mo where Bill was employed by Black Veatch Consulting Engineers In 1961 they moved to the Washington D C area where he worked in the Packers and Stockyards section of the U S Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1983 Reuniting with their families and many friends back in the Midwest Bill and Jean returned to Leavenworth and kept busy with many community and charitable causes including volunteer service with the Council on Aging Meals on Wheels program In 2000 they were awarded the General George Young Volunteers of the Year Award for
