Birds have a unique tract called a vent or cloaca which combines the excretory functions of urinary and solid waste and reproduction Birds mate through a quot cloacal kiss quot The white stuff you see represents what we would identify in human as urine while the darker matter represents the solid waste Coccidioidomycosis also known as quot Valley Fever quot or quot San Joaquin Valley Fever quot is a fungal disease infecting the lungs and is found in California s San Joaquin Valley soil and in Nevada Arizona and New Mexico It can be spread by birds fece The fungus Coccidioides immitis is causative and resides in the dusty arid soil of the American desert southwest where approximately 3 of residents develop the acute form of the disease in any given year by inhaling the airborne spores Most often the majority of those infected with the disseminated form recover without even knowing they were infected quot Zoonosis quot is the term used to describe diseases that can be transmitted to humans from animals if from parasites or insects fleas mosquitos etc they re called vector borne and there are a host of them including but not limited to quot bird flu quot Anisakiasis worms in raw fish Brucellosis sheep cows goats deer etc Campylobacteriosis most frequently found in undercooked chicken Cat Scratch Fever E coli especially O157 H7 mycobacteriosis from fish tanks giardia waterborne parasite found in the gut of wild and domesticated animals hantavirus one my personal favorite fascinating disease from deer or mice fece herpes B from monkeys amp other primates Leptospirosis raccoons rodents including squirrels amp chipmunks cattle dogs pigs Listeriosis unpasteurized milk of cattle goats Lymphocytic choriomeningitis LCMV common house mouse causes birth defects and mental retardation in humans Lyme Disease from ticks Monkeypox monkeys mice rabbits rodents Plague Yersinia
