So after yesterday s shock of finding only two nestlings left and the nest looking suspiciously messy I got on the internet to search for explanations and what to do If there is a blowfly infestation you are supposed to take the nestlings out and put them in a safe place remove the old nesting material and replace it with a new nest made of grasses and inspect the nestlings for any blowfly larvae that might be attached to them sucking their blood When I got there and looked at the nest I was surprised that it looked much cleaner than it did yesterday afternoon no fecal sacs left around nor any of those things I thought yesterday might be blowfly larvae My guess is that the parents got busy and cleaned it up But I went ahead and put the nestlings in a box brushed out the nestbox and created a new nest in the nestbox then inspected the nestlings and put them back When I removed the old nesting material a bunch of tiny gnat like things flew up whatever they were I didn t find any blowfly larvae on the nestlings and they appeared to be in good shape as far as I could tell It was scary handling them since I have never done that before I hope the new nest is comfortable I ve never made a bird s nest before I was surprised in my reading to discover that some people replace the nest midway through the nestling phase as a matter of course so hopefully my doing so did no harm even though I found no evidence of blowflies Hosting bluebird nests can be a bit of an emotional roller coaster
