Tonight <a href= http tight science com >Jen Wade< a> and I graduated from San Francisco s <a href= http www sfgov org site sfnert index asp id=3139 >Neighborhood Emergency Response Team< a> training program For the final class we got to put out a small fire rescue a dummy trapped under heavy debris confidential to Esteban See Levers and conduct a light search and rescue mission with live quot victims quot former students covered in fake blood I did not even faint a little La Wade was inspired to sign up after reading Christina Ducklow s <a href= http www sfgate com cgi bin blogs sfgate detail blogid=3 amp entry id=1236 >excellent entry< a> in SFGate s CultureBlog bonus Christina is my housemate And because La Wade is the boss of me I signed up too And if you re in San Francisco or any Bay Area town with a program you should sign up too It s free We learned that at any given time there are about 300 firefighters on duty in San Francisco And if a quake hits it s going to be days before outside help arrives The more self sufficient you can be after a quake the better that is for the rescue workers who then do not have to worry about your ass lovely as I am sure that it is And if you can help take care of others and do some of the less dangerous work so much the better Besides you will get a hard hat And a vest And learn how to identify unreinforced masonry buildings on sight Which for some reason I have become totally obsessed with OK public service announcement over Tomorrow we will return to your regularly scheduled random bits of the city and occasionally cats
