Scotland s People
The General Register Office for Scotland has digitised all of Scotland s Statutory Registers of Births Deaths amp Marriages since civil registration started on 1st January 1855 The Censuses of Scotland that have been preserved and open for public view those for 1841 1901 can be consulted The 1911 Census will remain closed until one day after the 100 years closure period elapses in England and Wales they have opened the 1911 Census for consultation two years early Scotland s Birth Death and Marriage registers have always been more detailed than their English Welsh and Irish counterparts The date amp place of your Parents marriage appears on your birth certificate Your time of birth and time of death has always been recorded Both of the parents names are recorded on the marriage and death certificates If you should happen to be married more than once the names of all of your spouses are recorded on the death certificate This means that women are indexed under all surnames that they have been known by during their life In contrast in England and Wales they only record the last married surname of a woman on the death index making it harder to find a female death In 1855 the General Register Office for Scotland was particularly enthusiastic about the information recorded on the certificates On the birth certificate they recorded the child s position in the family ie 5th child and 2nd daughter age and birthplace of the parents and finally number of years the parents had resided in registration district of child s birth On the 1855 marriage certificate they recorded the number of years since the previous marriage ended and the names and ages of children born during the previous marriage The 1855 death certificate also recorded the names and ages of all children and year of death if they had died first together the place of birth of the deceased and the number of years resident in the district of death In 1862 the General Register Office for Scotland stopped recording the name of t
