My family has suffered a wound almost as mortal as my daughter

My family has suffered a wound almost as mortal as my daughter

My family has suffered a wound almost as mortal as my daughter s Yet I was in no position to offer more than a Band Aid My family was drowning and so was I mother of a murdered child HOME changing roles + relations After a murder the family unit undergoes permanent changes that are difficult for the surviving members to accept As each member of the family struggles with his own pain and grief offering emotional support to the other members of the family network can be challenging Not only must each member navigate her own feelings about the murder she must also deal with the way her loved one died Familial roles undergo major transformations family members relationships will face challenges for reconstruction The murder may trigger other types of losses a family has had that may need to be reprocessed The way the family deals with the murder of a loved one can range from them becoming increasingly chaotic to increasingly rigid No other experience has prepared the family or its members how to deal with the homicide There is a sudden uninvited intrusion in their lives that changes their existence from private to public One study reports that the quality of the interface between the criminal justice system and the family is a major key to the family s impact and future resolution Marriages and family units are unique and have their own culture identifiers and rules fro existence They also have various levels connection with each other

Brazilian brotherhood

Brazilian brotherhood

I love to see and feel how close knit many of the larger and poorer families I work with are and where there clearly exists concordance between brothers and sisters and cousins too These are two of <a href= http www flickr com photos beija flor 1394446132 target= blank >Tamiris < a> four brothers three of whom participate at Hummingbird s main prevention centre 13 year old Diego in the foreground is an artist whilst his two brothers of whom 10 year old Leonardo is seen here in the background just love their football It s a great joy for me to be able to support these kids with almost new soccer boots of which I recently received a donation of 250 nicely used pairs from Canada in support of our football club There were even enough for me to pass on 50 pairs to another needy favela< i> community where the kids in a small community club were still playing barefoot As they were used boots the kids were utterly surprised to see how beautifully kept each pair of boots were compared to their own holy and down trodden ones that is if they had any in the first place My kids and I send a special thanks to Dale amp Dianne of Stuffed Animals Children s Charity in Toronto Canada < b>

Children s Day II

Children s Day II

Football brings out the true spirit of almost any child in Brazil 12th October is Brazilian Children s Day also known as the day of the Brazilian Patron Saint of the Family called Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida Mother of God Queen of the Angels Advocate of the Fishermen Refuge and Consolation of the Afflicted and Protector of the Family against illness hunger assault and any other perils that might affect us In other words quite a mouthful and just about everything we try to attain with our work for at risk children and youth in Brazil 12th October also marked the beginning of a new partnership in the Hummingbird Project namely the start up of our new community base at the Lar Maria amp Sininha Orphanage< i> right in the middle of the Favela called Morro do Macaco< i> Monkey s Mound called so because not so long ago before the hills were suddenly taken over by an organized invasion of impoverished families it was covered with what little is left of the once thriving Mata Atlântica Atlantic Rain Forest < a> which was cut down and cleared within a weekend to make way for thousands of shacks Along with this incredible action disappeared a wealth of natural resources and wildlife including the many monkeys that inhabited the area This kind of uncontrolled development not only irreversibly destroys nature but also puts a great deal of pressure on all public amenities and subsequently causes many of these families to live in a situation of high risk with even more children growing up in this country who lack some of the basic necessities of life Instead of organized public planning and policy this is yet another great example of how shortsighted our politicians are in running this wealthy country and creating the necessary means of sustainable development for all its inhabitants Once again NGO s like ours have to step in to try and reverse a very negative situation whilst we wait for more intelli

The man of the family

The man of the family

Everton is only eleven years old small for his age and with five younger siblings to look out for Living in utmost poverty with his mother in a simple shack in one of the many favelas< i> shanties that surround Hummingbird it is not so surprising that he transmits some special hidden strength that many of the kids we work with seem to A strength that is maybe only recognizable in their portraits and where I feel my camera lens is able to reach beyond just the face bringing forth the part of them that is normally concealed deep inside The usually innocent playful look on Everton s childish face is transformed into the kind of maturity that I see permeates the portraits of him in this window series Not surprising that most of the children on seeing their portraits have a surprised reaction and spend quite some time staring at their own faces in silence before eventually making any comments
