USDA Animal Research Cow with Fistula

I took this photo after a USDA staff told me that the cows in the field there were research animals They have a quot fistula quot which can only be seen in a large or original size view This is a special quot hole quot created above one of the cow s several stomachs and researchers can reach in to get samples of how various grains used for feeding livestock are processed through digestion When she first told me of this she may have seen the look on my face and she quickly added that quot the cows are treated very well here and live much longer quot This is one of those quot curiousity photos quot uploaded for the chance visitor to my stream who may be interested Here is what a blogger Chris Clarke had to say about the practice of using a fistula with the cow s rumen and there are some good comments to the blog post <a href= http faultline org index php site comments low and be holed >faultline org index php site comments low and be holed < a>
