78 365 May is ALS Awareness Month ALS is often referred to as Lou Gehrig s disease and it s ties to baseball continue The great New York Yankee Lou Gehrig died in 1941 of the disease when my mother was 10 and little more is known about it now than was known then I lost my own mother to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in 2004 ALS is a neurodegenerative disorder that steals a person s motor skills as the muscles needed for those skills atrophy Typically the person becomes physically weaker and weaker while mentally remaining sharp and aware of what is happening I say typically because this was not the case with my mother whose onset took place in her late 60s also atypical and began with her inability to speak and eventually her swallowing capacity was also greatly diminished In other cases it is men in their late 40s or 50s who begin with loss of ability to use their arms and legs as you and I do The need for research is greater than ever Though victims of ALS come in numbers much smaller than cancer the number of veterans of the Persian Gulf War who not only came down with the disease but often before the age of 45 generally unheard of with ALS indicates that exposure to certain things none of which has been positively identified but which most likely falls in the category of neurotoxin increases risk greatly We have been in Iraq now for five years are we going to see this wave of ALS diagnosis among its veterans come again a few years from now Will the currently controversial research pointing to aspartame and Nutrasweet as neurotoxins that lead to disorders like ALS be proven true My mother was diagnosed diabetic some years before her ALS diagnosis she consumed lots of artificial sweetener As for baseball each year the minor and major baseball leagues do what they can to create awareness Curt Schilling once on the Arizona Diamondbacks and now a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox has teamed up with various ALS organizations and his own Curt s Pitch for ALS to provide awar
