Alzheimer s Disease
To my beloved Flickr friends sorry I haven t been around much and making my rounds on your stream Hopefully I ll get back into it again but things have been overwhelming as of late Such a sad and scary disease My father was officially diagnosed yesterday and it was so nonchalantly and quite coldy done that it left me feeling numb full of questions that may never be answered and knowing that part of my father is gone forever He s not the same stubborn strong willed hard cold proud man I once knew and it makes me so sad I never imagined I d have to see first hand what this disease does I never thought I d have to sit at an appointment and almost hyperventilate because I was so nervous and uncomfortable over the memory test the nurse was giving my father He couldn t remember simple instructions given to him 30 seconds prior I m pretty sure he didn t even know who Holden was But he laughed about it and said it was ridiculous that they were even asking him those questions All I could do was look down at the floor and pray I didn t pass out My father and I have never been close but I have done my best to support him and my mother these past 2 years He was always so healthy before he was diagnosed with CHF and kidney cancer just two years ago Ever since then everything has gone down hill I know that I need to do everything I can in my power to advocate for my dad but deep down I just want to shut down I want to crawl in a hole and pretend that I didn t hear the Big Bad Terrible diagnosis and everything will continue on normally That I ll continue to visit with the kids and they ll make too much noise or my dad will get nervous that they are going to knock something over He ll huff and puff over a few crumbs on the ground But he is no longer that person He s lost the part of him that cared about anything His yard no longer matters The house no longer matters He is no longer the same person It s as if he doesn t even understand the words he just heard He was just diagnosed

edit My grandmother passed away Tuesday October 3 2006 She was 83 Please continue to pray for a cure for Alzheimer s Disease This is my Granny Ruth who practically raised me I was her only granddaughter for 17 years She is the love of my life of course that excludes my kids and hubby She is in stage 5 of Alzheimer s and lives in a world that never included me She has reverted back to her childhood and mostly talks about her sisters and what they did yesterday or the day before One day they ve planted a garden another day they re washing clothes on the front porch with their grandmother She always wonders why her parents never come to pick her up They ve been gone for years but she still packs every night and waits for them She seems to know there is a quot Rachel quot and every time I ask her if she knows who I am she says quot Well no not really quot I say quot I m Rachel your granddaughter quot and always always she says quot Oh I THOUGHT those were your eyes quot Maybe there s something of a memory of me there in her head somewhere In this photo which she didn t know I was taking she s telling me about the little boys that live in the bushes behind her house Of course there are no boys living in bushes behind her house I miss her so much I miss how she cooked me oatmeal bacon and toast when I d come down each morning before I went to work to spend time with her I miss taking her to get groceries and how she studied every sales paper before she would decide which store to go to I miss her delicious Christmas fudge and how she d always be surprised at the gifts we had made her for holidays I miss her laughter and how her purse always smelled like Doublemint gum I miss every single thing about her and she s still here She s here but her mind is not I ve already mourned for who she was but I ache for one more of her tight hugs every single day of my life Pray that there is a cure for Alzheimer s Disease soon It s too late for her but maybe not

THIS is Alzheimer s
I ve mentioned the story of Susan and Michael before but for those of you who don t know what I m talking about here s a refresher Susan is my mother s best friend They ve known each other FOREVER So for me Susan is like a second mother For as long as I can remember Susan has always been there for birthdays holidays family crisis etc And her son Michael seen above is like my big brother For most of my childhood our families were next door neighbors so naturally we ve become one large extended family Approximately 5 years ago Susan s father was diagnosed with Alzheimer s In my own words he was diagnosed with the <i> quot regular quot < i> or <i> quot typical quot < i> Alzheimer s Meaning he was 74 and had already lived a long life worked retired played golf and watched his grandson go off to college He was eventually moved to a professional care facility And today he is still living there Approximately 3 years after Michael s grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer s his mother was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer s Michael was 22 and Susan was 50 Since then Michael has dropped out of college moved back home and assumed full responsibility for his family mother grandmother and grandfather I can t explain how disturbing it is to watch Susan progress deteriorate succumb whatever you want to call it The only positive thing I can say is that while her symptoms increase I realize just how beautiful a person she really is She has become an angel incapable of controlling her love Susan may not remember how to use a curling iron but she will never forget how to hug and kiss Affection it seems will be the only thing to survive this catastrophe we call Alzheimer s gt For those of you who have read this and feel at ease because your family has no history of this disease think again Michael s grandfather and mother are the FIRST cases in their family
