Last night Jamie and I went to see the dramatization of the non fiction book <i>Growing Up Native in Alaska < i> quot The book is interviews with Alaska Natives 2 men and 3 women about racism social change rural living culture shock adapting to Western ways The book was amazing The dramatization was even more so The show was followed by an even more provocative panel discussion with the cast and both the CEO and VP of Alaska Native Heritage Center Kudos to Ed Bourgeois and all of the cast and crew for a show that was stunning in the developmental stages and will be phenomenal when it is complete

Pain Has an Element of Blank by Emily Dickinson Pain has an element of blank It cannot recollect When it began or if there were A day when it was not It has no future but itself Its infinite realms contain Its past enlightened to perceive New periods of pain Quarter of US Women Suffer Domestic Violence CDC By Will Dunham Reuters Thursday 07 February 2008 Washington About a quarter of U S women suffer domestic violence U S health officials reported on Thursday with ongoing health problems that one activist likened to the effects of living in a war zone Some men also experience domestic violence a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey found The CDC said 23 6 percent of women and 11 5 percent of men reported being a victim of what it called quot intimate partner violence quot at some time in their lives The CDC defined this as threatened attempted or completed physical or sexual violence or emotional abuse by a spouse former spouse current or former boyfriend or girlfriend or a dating partner The CDC estimates that 1 200 women are killed and 2 million injured in domestic violence annually Many of these women have other long term health risks and problems the CDC said quot It confirms that living in a dangerous and stressful environment has long term health impacts It s like living in a war zone quot said Rita Smith executive director of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence an advocacy group More than 70 000 people in 16 U S states and two territories Puerto Rico and the U S Virgin Islands responded to the CDC survey in 2005 Black women were more likely to report domestic violence than whites or Hispanics but it was most frequent among multiracial American Indian and Alaska native women Women of all income and education levels suffer such abuse although it was more frequent among the poorest and those who attended but did not graduate from college quot Perhaps

Multi Tribal Gathering Event at Fur Rondy Anchorage Alaska 2 23 08 History of Fur Rondy Fur Rendezvous began as a 3 day Winter Sports Carnival to coincide with winter fur trade and swap meet in 1935 by Vern Johnson It was a way to get together and celebrate the end of the long winter in Alaska There were such sports as basketball skiing hockey boxing and children s dog sled race down 4th Ave which has changed over the years to go beyond just traditional sports and now lasting 14 days to take it to the start of the Iditarod Fur Rondy now includes such events as the Dog Sled Championship Race Running with the Reindeer Outhouse Race Photo Contest Craft Fair Multi Tribal Gathering Skiing Costume Run Snowshoe Softball Ice Bowling carnival and many other exciting whimsical and lighthearted events to brighten everyone s cold winter day Fur Rondy is the largest Winter Festival in North America which is enjoyed not only by local Alaskan but also by visitors from all over the World
