Default Asthma in a 15 month old?

I just took my 15 month old daughter to the Dr. this morning for congestion that hasnt really dried up and went away. And the Dr. said she may have asthma and to give her breathing treatments 3 times a day for a week to see if it helps. I just wanted some insight on this from some people that have delt with the same situation. Thanks

Asthma is usually not diagnosed until the age of two or older. I would guess RSV or something like that.

My son was diagnosed with asthma by the time he was 6 months old (he is now 21). A child's age doesn't have much to do with the diagnosis, it is more the history of their respiratory illnesses; how often, how severe, what type, typical lung sounds and how well the illnesses respond to treatment. Some doctors won't officially say a child has asthma until they have had a few different "run-arounds" with "asthma like" respiratory situations in a child.

In my son's eyes, I treated his asthma as if it was nothing special. I think he thought it was kind of like needing to brush his teeth or something. I did, however, do the best I could to lessen the impact on his health by being quick to give him his medication (delayed mediacation leads to scar formation in the lungs), keeping his environment as irritant-free as possible, keeping him healthy (illness triggers most asthmas)- he always had his flu shot, encouraging exercise (to increase lung capicity), etc. He has never let his asthma keep him from doing anything he has wanted to do. To this day, most people do not realize he has asthma.

Give your daughter the breathing treatments, if she doesn't have asthma, it won't hurt her. If she does have asthma, it will honestly help her feel better.

I don't know if this was the kind of insight you were looking for. Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Sometimes children do not ger rid of their colds very good and no this does not mean the child is astmatic. But give her the treatments for a couple of days to see if it does help her loosenup the congestion.

Hopefully noone is smoking around the child, because this can also help her not get rid of her congestion.

I have asthma myself and as long as I am not around people that smoke I am just fine. The weather does make it sometimes worse for me. Dust can also make the symptoms bothersome.

Just keep doing her treatments for a few days to see if this helps her. Once she stops sounding congested then take her back to see her doctor, becuase it could have been she just needed something to open her airways.

Your doctor can also do a prick test to see if it was an alergic reaction to something.

Good Luck!

As a sufferer of asthma myself, I was diagnosed at a very young age too. It is harder to dianose younger treatment in children under the age of two because the tests arenot allways reliable, there canr be any vocal answers by the child and it could be other things. In my situation I had an allergy test but this is not a happy day out for the child. I didnt like it! lol. They put me on some medicins and they helped. Luckily My situation was quite simple and I dint have to wait long to get my asthma under control. Some doctors can be quite unhelpfull and not tell you anything much about asthma. The best option is to go onot the Asthma UK website and have a look about the symptons, medicicnes, info and loads more help!
I hope it all goes well!
Good Luck
Let me know how it goes on

My grandson is 16 mos and at 6 mos doctor said he had asthma. We did the treetments and all was fine till this winter and all hellO has broke loose. He has had a what the doctor is saying asthma attack for 2 months straight.I don't know how your weather is there but here in Kansas its very cold and alot of snow(more than we have had for the last 10 years put together). My Daughter thought it was something in our house.I think its all this cold air and weather.Nobody is useto it.Everyone is getting sick and these babies are catching all types of respertory illnesses and are getting one after the other. The treetmentrs will help dry up the infection so give them to her.
