Acetaminophen is added to codeine because there is a synergistic analgesic effect (i.e., greater than the sum of its parts) when those two drugs are combined. So people get more pain relief with less risk of side effects. ... my taking any pain-reliever other than codeine or codeine analogs, like hydrocodone.
